This is going to be very hard to do. I don't have the hardware and the log isn't written.
Does this version work on the machine with the other Nvidia card?
1. useless attachment

2. yes, i know, and by no mean ask to fix it. merely wanted to inform about the problem, nothing more.

3. hoped you wouldn't ask about another box with nvidia :) . it is not... physically installed right now. must do it first, connect it, install SolydK, do the tests. it'll take an hout or two. i know that i must do it, to make a complete test.

Moved all posts to the DDM topic (better to centralize debugging).

for scrupulous developers :) only: yes, it does.

testing environment:
  • fully updated SolydK64 Stable: solydk64_201501.iso 30-Jan-2015 14:02 1.6G
  • nvidia-optimus video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M
  • DDM version: 2.0.3
1. the old DDM 2.0.2, included with ISO, still has the [Save] button that really means "Install"

2. DDM updated to 2.0.3

3. the new DDM 2.0.3 has the [Install] button in place of mystical [Save]. developer hears the users. thanks!

4. started from terminal, at some point DDM requests user's confirmation in terminal's popup window. was away for a cup of tea, on return terminal didn't get my Enter / mouse clicks on the [OK] button. brutally cancelled the installation.

5. system restored from a backup, DDM updated to 2.0.3. this time decide to run DDM 2.0.3 normally, from the menu.

6. DDM in actionImage

7. DDM has finishedImage

8. proprietary nvidia-optimus drivers successfully installed, in about 8 minutes and without any interaction with the user. nice!Image
caution: never run "NVIDIA X Server Settings" from the menu or from terminal, if you don't know the correct way to do so. exiting from this window saving settings will completely destroy nvidia-optimus config.

9. done

conclusion
  • on Dell XPS 17 (l702x) with NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M optimus card DDM 2.0.3 works
  • on Acer Aspire V5-573G with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M optimus card DDM 2.0.3 causes the system's freeze
  • i'm in overdose from SolydXK for today. signing out.

Please, post back with these files compressed and attached:

another day, another attempt. testing environment:
  • fully updated SolydK64 Stable: solydk64_201501.iso 30-Jan-2015 14:02 1.6G
  • nvidia-optimus video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
  • DDM version: 2.0.3
DDM 2.0.3 continues to completely freeze the systetm. this time, before the system's death and differently from the previous attempt:
  • i've got two screen shots
  • the magic Alt+SysRq shutdown apparently didn't work on this box (the hard power off was needed), but a piece of /var/log/ddm.log has survived. it's in attachment.
  • the hard power off doesn't cause any damage to the system, it continues to work nicely on intel gpu with intel drivers and without nvidia ones
1. DDM 2.0.3 presents 2 video cards. don't like the fact that it doesn't preceed the card's name with (Optimus) prefix, like for another nvidia card. does it understand that this one is an optimus as well?Image

2. after clicking the [Install] button ddm.log is createdImage

3. the system freezes

4. three consequtive Alt+SysRq REISUB don't shut down the system, but the piece of ddm.log survives after a hard power reset.

Thank you all for your feedback.
I'll be looking at it today and will post back if I have a new version to test.

@just
Opening the log file I get this message:

Code: Select all

The file /tmp/kde-arjen/arkwCGhKI//ddm.log was opened with UTF-8 encoding but contained invalid characters.
It is set to read-only mode, as saving might destroy its content.
Either reopen the file with the correct encoding chosen or enable the read-write mode again in the menu to be able to edit it
with all weird characters at the bottom of the file. Also I see debconf has a problem of showing a window for user input. I think that's what needs attention first.

Schoelje, know what? I won't call you Gandalf anymore. You've passed to the dark side of the force. Sauron would be more suitable nick :D .

You make your users to loose two days, trying to confuse us and leaving us alone :D to discover that DDM 2.0.3 simply doesn't compose the cards list in the correct order :) . The card named Intel corresponds to Nvidia. The card named Nvidia is... don't know what.

In brief: to install nvidia-bumblebee drivers you need to select Intel. The installation log is attached.

1. testing environment:
  • fully updated SolydK64 Stable: solydk64_201501.iso 30-Jan-2015 14:02 1.6G
  • nvidia-optimus video card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M
  • DDM version: 2.0.3
2. Intel video card is selected to install drivers for NvidiaImage

3. Installation log is createdImage

4. DDM 2.0.3 is happily running on Intel, installing drivers for NvidiaImage

5. DDM 2.0.3 has finishedImage

6. Proprietary nvidia-bumblebee drivers are successfully installed, in about 9 minutes and without any interaction with the userImage

caution: never run "NVIDIA X Server Settings" from the menu or from terminal, if you don't know the correct way to start it. This window will open, but if you Quit from it Saving Changes, nvidia-optimus config will be destroyed.

7. The excellent nvidia-optimus computers may use either free Intel video drivers for simple tasks

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card-1: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:0a16
           Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 750M] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:0fe4
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.2.901 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.21hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Haswell Mobile GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2 Direct Rendering: Yes
$
8. Or, when Nvidia's horsepower is needed, proprietary video drivers are always available

Code: Select all

$ optirun inxi -Gxx
Graphics: Card-1: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:0a16
           Card-2: NVIDIA GK107M [GeForce GT 750M] bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:0fe4
Display Server: X.Org 1.16.2.901 drivers: intel (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.21hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce GT 750M/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 4.4.0 NVIDIA 340.65 Direct Rendering: Yes
$
9. done

Conclusion
  • DDM 2.0.3 works for all nvidia-optimus cards i have
  • the only small problem with it is that sometime the list of available cards is not composed / presented in the correct order
  • or, more than 1 only intended card are presented
  • once the correct card is found, installation runs without a problem
There's the installation log in attachment.

Aaargh! It should only list the Nvidia card, not the Intel card with "(Optimus)" in front of the card name.
I'm going to create a version with more debug information.

Okay, I've updated and replaced the deb file.
This should give me more verbose output in the log file. So, if you could run these commands for me:

Code: Select all

wget http://downloads.solydxk.com/dev/ddm_2.0.3_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i ddm_2.0.3_all.deb
and start DDM from the menu.
Don't install anything, just let it open: I need the log file to see how your hardware is listed.

It was selected for the wrong reason, I'm afraid.
Because it recognizes Optimus, it checked the loaded driver and saw that intel was loaded. However, it did not check if bumblebee-nvidia was intalled. If it wasn't, it shouldn't have pre-selected the card.

Going to adapt that as well.

Do you have bumblebee-nvidia installed?
If you don't know, you can do the wget / dpkg commands again (I've inserted some extra logging).

1. no, i do not. there's no bumblebee-nvidia currently installed.
2. re-downloaded, re-installed, re-started from menu, exited without doing anything.
3. ddm's content is identical to the previous image. the card is not pre-selected.

Well, yes it is :D
There's a new line:

Code: Select all

 get_nvidia DEBUG bumblebee-nvidia version:
which doesn't show a version number for bumblebee-nvidia. That is exactly how it should look like if that driver isn't installed.

If you like, you can try to install the driver with DDM.
If things go wrong:

Code: Select all

ddm -open
